TDSB finalizes list of school closures for review

WATCH ABOVE: The TDSB has turned in a list of schools it will consider closing. And at a meeting Tuesday night, the board added ten more to the chopping block.

TORONTO – The Toronto District School Board has finalized its list of under-utilized schools as it looks to cut costs ahead of Friday’s provincial deadline.

At a special meeting Tuesday night, trustees voted and approved a list of 48 schools to review over the next three years for possible closure or boundary changes.

The list of closures is just one of 13 directives handed down by the province following the release of a scathing report on the board’s finances and operations.

Trustees also voted to sell off 20 sites already closed down but currently being leased to private schools or daycares.

The board’s chair Shaun Chen says trustees will reach out to the community for input on future closings or sales.

Board officials hope any sales will help them make a dent in a repair backlog estimated at $3.5 billion.

Before noon Wednesday, trustees will hand their list of schools under review to Ontario Education Minister Liz Sandals.

She had ordered the TDSB to get its finances in order by Feb. 13 .
