CARROT RIVER, Sask. – A misdialed call about a missing Saskatchewan snowmobiler has turned out to be a hoax. Carrot River RCMP say they received an anonymous letter on Thursday saying three young girls were responsible for the complaint.
Mounties were initially informed on Jan. 31 that someone had received a call from someone named “Cassandra” who was attempting to reach her grandmother “Katherine Pierce.”

“Cassandra” stated she had run her snowmobile into a tree outside of the northern Saskatchewan community, was with her sister and was disoriented.
The call touched off a search involving Mounties and local residents. Civilian air search and rescue from La Ronge spent four hours flying around the area looking for the missing girls.
The investigation also involved SaskTel, school employees from Carrot River, Arborfield and Nipawin and healthcare workers.

RCMP say the letter brings closure to all involved but would like to identify the girls so they can speak to them about the impact of their actions. Officials say it put others needlessly at risk, placed an emotional strain on those involved in the investigation and had them questioning whether they had done enough to locate the girls given the conditions.
