The flu still a concern across Alberta: officials

Health officials say the flu is still a concern in Alberta.

While the number of cases is slightly higher in the Calgary zone, more people have been hospitalized in the Edmonton area.

527 people have been admitted to Edmonton-area hospitals and 19 have died.

By comparison, in Calgary, 13 people have died and nearly 300 have sought treatment in hospitals.

The season isn’t yet over and already in Alberta there have been 52 deaths. The province usually counts 30 to 40 deaths an entire season.

In total there have been nearly 4,000 lab-confirmed cases of the flu across Alberta.

Of the 56 influenza outbreaks in the Calgary zone, eight are currently active – five  in acute care and three in other care facilities.

There are no active influenza outbreaks in any Calgary-area schools.
