AIRDRIE – RCMP have charged a 17 year old man and “notified his mother” after he was caught speeding excessively near Airdrie.

The Integrated Traffic Unit was conducting speed enforcement on Range Road 11 about two kilometers North of Highway 566 Wednesday morning.

The road is very narrow and heavily traveled by Airdrie residents heading towards Balzac.

The young man was driving a newer model Hyundai Genesis with his girlfriend. The officer clocked him at 182 km/h in a posted 80 km/h maximum zone.

“Speeding is one of the top priorities of the Integrated Traffic Units in Alberta and a common factor involved in serious injury and fatal collisions (26%). This young man is lucky the officer was there. Crashing at that speed, could have been catastrophic. The faster you drive, the harder you hit” said Corporal Darrin Turnbull of the Airdrie Integrated Traffic Unit.
