Don’t worry — it’s completely safe! The thickness of the ice is tested daily before opening and if there’s any irregularity, the site is closed.

Here’s a quick rundown of 5 things you need to know about ice fishing in Montreal:

You need a fishing licence

A permit for each family is required. To obtain a licence, bring identification with an address when you come to the Village.

Alcohol and dogs are allowed

As long as it is consumed reasonably, alcohol is allowed on site — not to mention food and dogs (on a leash)!

Ice shanties are heated

There are two varieties — a tent or a shack — and both are heated. These also include benches and lights, and there are even heated toilets on site.

Don’t know how to fish? No problem

There are trained guides on site to help with any fishing-related questions. You don’t even need to bring your own bait or fishing gear, you can get it there.

Can I bring home my catch?

Oh yes, taking home fresh fish is the best part! There are limits of course: 3 Yellow and Black Walleye per person, 1 Pike, 10 Perch and an unlimited number of Burbot.
