TORONTO — Quebec filmmaker Xavier Dolan and actress Anne Dorval and Regina-born Tatiana Maslany are among the nominees announced Monday for this year’s Dorian Awards.
Dolan’s drama Mommy, which earned raves at the Cannes film festival last year, got a nod in the Foreign Language Film of the Year category. Dolan is nominated for Wilde Artist of the Year, which honours “a truly groundbreaking force” in entertainment.
Mommy star Dorval is nominated for Film Performance of the Year – Actress.
Maslany is up for TV Performance of the Year – Actress. Her Toronto-shot series Orphan Black is nominated for Unsung TV Show of the Year.
Last year, Dolan had four nominations for Dorian Awards and Maslany had two. Neither won.
The Dorian Awards are voted on by roughly 100 members of the Gay and Lesbian Entertainment Critics Association (GALECA).
By comparison, the Golden Globe Awards are chosen by fewer than 90 members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA). GALECA, unlike the HFPA, makes the affiliations of its members public. They include journalists at Us Weekly, InStyle, Hollywood Reporter, New York Times, The Associated Press and Global News.
