TORONTO — U.K. actor Stephen Fry confirmed Tuesday he is engaged to comedian Elliott Spencer.
“It looks as though a certain cat is out of a certain bag,” Fry tweeted. “I’m very very happy of course but had hoped for a private wedding. Fat chance!”
Fry later tweeted: “Thank you all SO much for your kind congratulations. Deeply touched xxx.”
The 57-year-old star of The Hobbit and 24: Live Another Day and Spencer, 27, filed registration papers at a county office in Norfolk on Dec. 23. They have one year to marry.
Equal marriage rights became law in England last March.

Fry, who is the voice of the narrator in the popular Little Big Planet video game, split from his longtime partner Daniel Cohen in 2010.
Friends told U.K. newspaper The Sun that Spencer has been a positive influence on Fry.
“Since Stephen met Elliott, it is like he has a new lust for life,” one is quoted as saying.
“We’ve got the old Stephen back. He has found new hope in Elliott and they thrive off each other.”
According to the Daily Mail, Spencer’s father — who is the same age as Fry — said: “We are obviously very happy. We are over the moon.”
Fry is receiving well-wishes on social media.
“Your adorable tweets are bringing me close to sobbing,” Fry tweeted.
