California hit by snowstorm, stranding hundreds

WATCH: It’ll be a chilly start to 2015 for millions of people in the U.S. Forecasts are calling for record cold in parts of California and the possibility of snow in Las Vegas. Some cities are even cancelling New Year’s Eve celebrations. Aarti Pole reports.

TORONTO – California just can’t catch a break.

After suffering from a record drought this year, a winter storm hit the struggling state overnight Tuesday into Wednesday.

According to the Los Angeles Times, several motorists were trapped and six trucks were on their sides on highways across the southern part of the state.

WATCH: Much of the West will be ringing in the new year with freezing temperatures, snow and wind. Bigad Shaban reports from Pasadena.

About 15 cm of snow fell in some areas. While it’s not unheard of for snow in the higher altitudes, this snow reached farther south than normal.

In San Bernadino County, hundreds of cars were trapped on mountain highways.

Cold weather and snow is plaguing parts of the U.S. southwest, bringing unusual weather across the region.
