TORONTO – Mother Nature picked a heck of a time to return to winter.

December across the country was warmer than normal, but as the month — and the year — comes to a close, the cold weather has returned. But where will the “warmest” place for an outdoor New Year’s celebration be?

Well, in Vancouver it’s slightly below the normal low of 0 C at -3 C, so it won’t be too bad.

In Calgary, it will be almost balmy. Typically, the low is -15 C, but for New Year’s Eve 2014, it will be -4 C. Even with the wind chill of -11 C, it’ll feel warmer than normal.

And in Winnipeg, the city that is known for its gripping chilly weather, it will be above the seasonal low of -23 C: revellers can enjoy a temperature of -10 C, though the wind chill will make it feel like -17 C.

Heading east to Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal, though temperatures will be close seasonal, it will be between -7 to -10 C with a wind chill of -18 C and that’s pretty chilly. Interestingly, it will be around the same temperature in Whitehorse.

In Toronto, the temperature will be a bit chilly at midnight.

Halifax will be -12 C, which is pretty normal for this time of year.

But it’s Victoria that will have the best temperature when the bells chime at midnight: it’s expected to be around 1 C.

The place to avoid going outdoors has to be Yellowknife. The city will see a low of -27 C overnight with a wind chill of -32 C.

Of course, it’s winter and it’s Canada so it’s cold. Many of us will just don our winter gear and head out and ring in the new year in Canadian style: cold.
