HALIFAX – A musician with Maritime roots is launching a Canada-wide charity that will provide new and gently-used shoes to the needy.
Myles Goodwyn, a founding member of April Wine, has created Soleful Caring and is launching the charity in conjunction with Shelter Nova Scotia and Value Village. It will start in Halifax, but in an interview on Friday, Goodwyn said it would go as far west as Vancouver in the months ahead.

Goodwyn says his own personal experiences with diabetes are what sparked the idea for the charity. He came up with the idea while speaking with a friend who also has diabetes.
“We have a special concern that we don’t cut or hurt our feet or perhaps lose a foot, or a toe, or even a leg,” he said. “So we were discussing this and he went on to suggest an organization that could collect footwear for the homeless and the situation is quite dire,” Goodwyn said.
When he followed up with his friend, Dr. Stan van Duyse, he hadn’t started it yet so Goodwyn took the lead.
People in Halifax who want to donate new or gently-used shoes and boots can drop them off at the Value Village on Chain lake Drive starting on Saturday.
The organization is hoping to collect 1,500 pairs of shoes, and the first day for distribution will be Jan. 14, 2015.
