Accused in Cole Harbour shooting faces more charges

HALIFAX – A teen charged with three counts of attempted murder is now facing weapons charges in a separate incident in which he shot himself in the leg.

Markel Jason Downey faces eight weapons charges in relation to an incident at the Canada Day concert at Alderney Landing in Dartmouth where a man approached police at the concert with a gunshot wound in his leg.

He was treated in hospital for a non-life threatening injury but was uncooperative with police.

Police later determined he was carrying a loaded handgun in his shorts and shot himself while handling it.

The firearm has not been recovered.

Downey is also charged in a shooting at a house on Arklow Drive in Cole Harbour last month. The shooting left three people seriously wounded.

One victim has been left paralyzed by her injuries.
