Figures from the federal government show Manitoba can expect $3.4 billion in transfer payments in the fiscal year that starts next April.

That’s a 2.2 per cent increase from the current year.
More than half the money comes from the equalization program that is aimed at helping poorer provinces.
The Manitoba government is in the midst of several years of deficits and has promised to balance the budget by 2016.
Finance Minister Greg Dewar said last week a balance budget is still the goal, but it will not happen if it requires deep cuts to government services.
