TORONTO — The U.S. holiday weekend brought sad news to those connected to the daytime drama The Young and the Restless.

On Friday it was revealed that Julian St. John, the son of Y&R star Kristoff St. John, took his life five days earlier. He was only days away from his 25th birthday.

“Our son was the light of our lives, an artist with a beautiful mind and spirit,” Julian St. John’s mother, professional boxer Mia St. John, wrote on social media.

“He fought long and hard against an illness for which there is no cure. Unfortunately the pain became too great for him and I dare not say he lost the battle–he simply chose to set himself free.”

Mia divorced Kristoff in 1995.

Both parents shared links to Julian’s art.

Funeral services are scheduled for Julian’s birthday, Dec. 5, in Westlake, California.

On Thursday, actor Corey Sligh was struck by a car and then assaulted in West Hollywood as he was delivering Thanksgiving dinners to friends at a Rite-Aid store.

Sligh, 27, has played a waiter and bartender on Y&R. He has also appeared on Days of Our Lives.

According to CBS News, Sligh asked a man who was driving recklessly in the parking lot to slow down. He was then hit by a car and two men got out and assaulted him.

He was taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Centre with injuries including a broken arm.

“Have a surgery to go and another couple days in the hospital but should be fine soon,” Sligh said on Instagram. “Hope to heal up in the next few weeks with Rehab and family!”

Police were able to locate the suspects and make arrests.
