Parole denied for man who killed Kelly-Anne Drummond

MONTREAL — A parole board has refused a request for parole from Martin Morin-Cousineau, the man who killed Kelly-Anne Drummond ten years ago.

The hearing took an hour and a half, and the parents of the victim, Doreeen Haddad and John Drummond, presented compelling victim impact statements.

Parole board members came to a quick decision in just ten minutes after the hearing finished. They said Morin-Cousineau had “major anger problems,” noting that he still denies murdering his girlfriend to this day.

On Oct. 4, 2004, Drummond was murdered by Morin-Cousineau inside their Pierrefonds apartment, when she was fatally stabbed in the head with a steak knife.

At the hearing on Thursday, he insisted repeatedly that what took place was an accident, suggesting that one of the reasons he has anger issues is that no one believes him.

He is eligible for full parole in 2017, but he was applying to leave prison and move to a halfway house on day parole.

Kelly-Anne’s mother, Doreen Haddad, said she believes the 40-year-old remains “a danger to society.”

“I’m scared for him meeting a young woman who doesn’t know him and falls for this guy,” Haddad told Global News before the hearing.

She was particularly concerned because Morin-Cousineau may not have been rehabilitated. She said after registering for a prison therapy program to deal with anger issues; he dropped out three days later.

During his ten years in prison, Morin-Cousineau has been charged with several offences, including possession of an “unauthorized item,” altercations with other inmates, and drug use.

The parole hearing took place at the medium security prison in Cowansville, where Morin-Cousineau is being detained.

In a poignant coincidence, tomorrow would have been Kelly-Anne Drummond’s birthday.
