Cleanup underway after winds knock down power lines, topple trees

TORONTO – A cleanup operation is underway after a number of downed trees were reported in the Greater Toronto Area during the early morning hours as strong winds moved through the region overnight.

Wind gusts reached up to 100 km/h in some areas which resulted in dangerous driving conditions and power outages for thousands of residents in southern Ontario.

Toronto Hydro reported late Monday night that approximately 8,000 customers were without power. That number was reduced in half around 6 a.m. and down to 2,000 at 9 a.m.

Areas without electricity included parts of Scarborough, Etobicoke, North York, and The Beaches area.

Toronto Hydro says some customers might not have their power fully restored until Tuesday afternoon.

Toronto police are also warning motorists that multiple traffic signals at intersections across the city are still out and to treat them as four-way stops.

Powerstream customers in Barrie and Markham had their electricity disrupted overnight but the majority of residents had their power restored around 5 a.m.

Meanwhile, Hydro One reported nearly 400 outages affecting 87,000 customers overnight.

Crews are still on scene in certain areas to repair the damages caused by the windstorm.
