Edmonton police warn of Canadian Finals Rodeo online ticket scam

2013 CFR in Edmonton. Global News

EDMONTON — The Edmonton Police Service is warning the public of an apparent online scam in connection to tickets to the Canadian Finals Rodeo.

The EPS says it is aware of more than 30 cases of an “online scam” involving CFR ticket sales on Kijiji.

Police say the apparent sellers give the buyers an excuse as to why they cannot meet in person to hand over the CFR tickets. The sellers then ask for an e-transfer payment from the buyers. Once the payment is received, the sellers end all contact with the buyers, EPS says.

“Unfortunately for this event there is no way to confirm whether or not the tickets are legitimate until you actually try to gain access to the event,” said Cst. Mike Walkom. “With that being said you do need to be extra vigilant when you’re buying your tickets.”

Police urge ticket buyers to protect themselves by following these tips:

  • Purchase tickets through an authorized seller
  • Obtain a bill of sale from the seller and confirm their identity through government-issued photo identification
  • Conduct the sale in a public location with surveillance cameras, such as a police station

Anyone who has fallen victim to the apparent scam is asked to contact the EPS at 780-423-4567 or #377 from a mobile phone. Anonymous information can be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online.
