MONTREAL – A Canadian who left home 11 years ago to walk around the world expects to complete his improbable journey this weekend.

Jean Beliveau plans to reach Montreal on Sunday after walking more than 75,000 kilometres through 64 countries.

Beliveau says he drew inspiration from Terry Fox before embarking on the mission to promote peace and raise awareness about children facing violence.

Along the way, Beliveau says he was taken in by escaped murderers, ate insects in Africa and had a close encounter with a puma in a South American desert.

But the 56-year-old also says he met wonderful people during an adventure that opened his eyes to the world.

Beliveau says he plans to repay a huge emotional debt he owes to his family, who encouraged him the entire time – even when he thought about giving up.
