WATCH: A California fisherman found a message in a bottle floating in the ocean. The message was sent by a child in Hawaii years ago. Amanda Starrantino reports.
TORONTO – A Shell Beach, California fisherman caught something impressive in the water – and it wasn’t a fish.
David Wilson had just returned from an unsuccessful day of fishing over the weekend when he lost his sandal on the beach. Bending down to reach for it in the water, he was surprised to wrap his hand around a message in a bottle.
After drying out the contents, Wilson soon realized that the message was actually a birthday invitation sent by a girl named Safina in Maui, Hawaii four years ago. The girl’s last name is too difficult to decipher accurately.
“There is somebody out there that put that out there and was hoping to get a response or someone to come to them and enjoy their birthday party with them,” Wilson said.

If Wilson does manage to track down the author of the message, he’ll have to explain why he was late for the party.
“Of all the odd things that wash up on this beach and I pick up, that was one of the things I am glad that I picked up out of the water that day,” Wilson said. “I guess that is just the Hawaiian spirit.”
