Elderly man dies in classic car crash

An elderly man has died in the crash of a classic car, which police say raises questions about the safety of vintage automobiles.

The tiny 1960 Fiat crashed into the back of a pickup truck on southbound Main Street at Dufferin Avenue at about 3:45 pm Tuesday. The 80 year man at the wheel died of injuries in hospital; the 71 year woman passenger remains in hospital in stable condition.

The half-century old vintage vehicle is not equipped with what would be mandatory safety equipment on modern automobiles, including seat belts and airbags. Police couldn’t say to what extent the lack of safety equipment contributed to the injuries, but say it is a problem common to classic cars that pre-date modern safety requirements.

“When it comes to older vehicles that is some of the risks, because we know older vehicles do not meet or even come close to some of the safety standards of newer vehicles right now,” said Winnipeg Police Constable Jason Michalyshen.

The name of the man killed in the crash was not released.
