KELOWNA — It already has a picturesque path great for leisurely walks, a more challenging hike through varying ecosystems and now a third phase of improvements to the trail along Mission Creek in Kelowna can move forward.
“Phase three is the shared vision of walking along the scenic canyon ridges,” says Kathie Jones with Friends of Mission Creek Society.
The Mission Creek Greenway Regional Park trail system will be extended upstream beyond the current end in Scenic Canyon Regional Park.
There are also plans to add sections of stair cases, a small pedestrian bridge over KLO Creek and more than two kilometers of upgraded trails along the east side of that creek.
All of this is possible thanks to a generous donation from the Friends of Mission Creek Society.
“We raised almost half a million dollars more than was actually needed at the time. So, that money is now all being put towards the completion of this phase 3a,” says Jones.
This year is the 40th anniversary of the Central Okanagan Regional Park system.
According to the regional district, the first purchase of 4 hectares of land in 1974 has grown to protect more than 1,900 hectares in 31 regional parks.
Work on the trail along mission Creek is scheduled to start this fall.
