TORONTO – Toronto City Hall is open for business Monday after a fire forced the closure of the municipal building last Thursday.
The electricity was restored after five emergency generators were brought in, however the measures are temporary.
Toronto Hydro said it could take several weeks to have the damage inside the hydro vault completely repaired.
“Crews worked throughout the weekend to run and connect cables to the temporary generators that will provide power to City Hall while permanent repairs to the electrical system are carried out over the next several weeks,” the city said in a media release.
Toronto Hydro said crews were working in the hydro vault room when the fire started on Thursday afternoon.
The entire building was evacuated, including 1,500 staff and employees.
The exact cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Meanwhile, the Hester How Daycare, which operates in the building, will resume operations on Monday.
The Café on the Square and the Toronto Public Library branch at City Hall will also open as usual.
