Dirty, garbage-strewn streets of Vancouver frustrate residents

Vancouver has always had a reputation as a clean city, but some are wondering if it’s starting to slip.

Many people are complaining that garbage is piling up all over the city.

Rhea Lees has been delivering mail downtown for nearly a decade and says she has to watch her step now more than ever.

“People just seem to leave their garbage wherever they want, a lot of cigarette butts everywhere,” says Lees.

According to the city, the amount of litter tossed onto city streets every year is increasing. A significant amount of it is collected by community street cleaners, but much of it still remains — tarnishing Vancouver’s green city image.

A recent poll by Insights West found littering is British Columbians’ biggest pet peeve.

Many Vancouver residents say there aren’t enough garbage cans — something the city says it’s working to address.

Officials plan to add about 200 garbage bins over the next year, mainly near public transit stops and stations.
