HALIFAX – Residents near Fergusons Cove were back home Tuesday evening after being directed to leave the area just after 3:15 p.m.

A contractor for the Department of National Defence found a suspicious object while working at a construction site on Fergusons Cove Road and alerted authorities.

In coordination with Halifax Police, Navy Public Affairs Officer Capt. Liam Mather says residents within one kilometre of the site were asked to leave their homes. Coast Guard Ship the Earl Grey was dispatched to secure the waters around the site to make sure boats didn’t come within the perimeter.

The diving unit confirmed the object was an old unexploded ordnance, and Capt. Mather says it was secured and safely transported away from the scene.

Grade 8 student Kyle Hardy was just home from school when his family was asked to evacuate, he says he wasn’t concerned.

“I knew that we were fairly far from the water, a bomb of that size would deal little to know damage to this area,” said Hardy. “I was fairly amused, I thought it was kind of fun to go out, nobody else shared that sentiment.”

Hardy left along with his mother, younger brother and Grandma. Residents were allowed back in their homes just after 5 p.m.

Capt. Mather says the ordnance will be safely detonated at a later date.
