Blaze traps 2 people in West Broadway home

WINNIPEG – A fire sparked when a pot of food was left on a stove trapped two people overnight.

Firefighters, who were called to 41 Furby St. just after 1 a.m. Tuesday, rescued one person from a balcony and another from a roof, the Winnipeg fire department said.

There were four people in the home when the fire broke out; two escaped on their own.

There were also four cats in the house and one died, fire officials said.

Damage to the home, which contained more than one suite, is estimated at $100,000.
