Saturday homicide victim was Janelle Jirasek, 24, Winnipeg police say

WINNIPEG – The woman slain in what appears to have been a domestic dispute on the weekend was Janelle Jirasek, 24, police say.

Kyle William Hunter, 25, has been charged with second-degree murder. He’s also charged with attempted murder, attempting to disarm a peace officer, possessing a weapon for a dangerous person and failing to comply with an undertaking after a police officer was injured while arresting him.

Jirasek, a Red River College student, and Hunter got in a fight at their St. Boniface basement suite and Hunter allegedly grabbed a knife and stabbed her, police said.

He fled and police were called.

Police found Hunter in the area of Caton and Hill streets and while trying to arrest him, a police officer’s arm was cut. He was disarmed but then allegedly tried to grab the officer’s gun.

Police found Jirasek, who had been stabbed in the upper body, in her basement suite. She was taken to hospital in critical condition and later pronounced dead, police said.
