Man charged in St. Boniface homicide

WINNIPEG – Police have charged a 25 year-old man after an early morning homicide in St. Boniface Saturday.

A 24-year-old woman was killed and a police officer was hurt in a violent incident Saturday.

Officers were called to the home of the man and woman in the first 100 block of Hill St. at about 4:30 a.m. in response to calls of a dispute in the basement suite during a domestic incident.

Police say a woman was found in the home with serious upper body stab wounds and taken to hospital in critical condition where she was later pronounced dead.

“It really doesn’t get much worse than this with investigations, and officers responded clearly dealing with a very aggressive individual,” said Const. Jason Michalyshen.

Officers combed the area looking for the 25- year-old suspect Kyle William Hunter who fled the house. Police confronted Hunter down the street and an officer was injured with a knife while the suspect was being taken into custody. During the struggle the suspect also unsuccessfully tried to grab the officers pistol.

Neighbours were woken up by police canvasing the street for any information. “At six in the morning police knocking on the door just to see if I knew what happened but I was sleeping,” said neighbour Jeremie Gosslin.

Another neighbour adding, “at 6:30 there was some pounding at my door, terrified, didn’t really know what to think,” said Amanda Vermette.

Hunter has been charged with second degree murder, attempted murder of the police officer, attempt to disarm a peace officer, possess weapon for dangerous purpose, and fail to comply undertaking.

The homicide unit is investigating, family members of the female victim are being notified, and autopsy results and charges are pending.
