TORONTO — Canadian actress Caroline Rhea is set to star in A Very Sordid Wedding, a sequel to Del Shores’ 2001 cult classic Sordid Lives.
Rhea, a native of Montreal who is best known for her role on the sitcom Sabrina The Teenage Witch, played Noleta Nethercott on the short-lived 2008 Sordid Lives TV series — taking over the role played by Delta Burke in the original movie.
Joining Rhea in the sequel will be Bonnie Bedelia and Leslie Jordan, who played Latrelle Williamson and Earl Ingram respectively in both the first movie and the TV series.
The original film explored how conservative southern families reacted to relatives coming out as gay.
Shores reportedly spent a year working on a script for A Very Sordid Wedding, which will take on the issue of equal marriage.
“I’m excited for this next chapter exploring the advancement of equality to finish the story of these characters that so many people have grown to love,” said Shores in a release.
“The fans have begged and pleaded for it, and we are co-dependent people pleasers. So here we go.”
An Indiegogo campaign was recently launched to raise $96,270 for the film’s legal and pre-production costs.
Shores hopes the movie will start filming in Dallas next spring.
Rhea, 50, provides the voice of Linda Flynn-Fletcher on Phineas and Ferb and performs stand-up comedy.
Sordid Lives, an adaptation of Shore’s 1996 stage play, won numerous awards on the film festival circuit, ran for a record-breaking 96 weeks at a Palm Springs cinema, and sold more than 300,000 copies on DVD.
