TORONTO — Actress and dancer Julianne Hough appeared to out actor Jonathan Bennett as gay last week during an interview with the syndicated TV show Extra.

Bennett, who is best known for playing heartthrob Aaron Samuels in the 2004 made-in-Toronto comedy Mean Girls, has never publicly come out.

The 33-year-old is currently a competitor on Dancing With The Stars. Hough is a judge on the show.

Hough told Extra host Mario Lopez: “He tweeted at me last year and said I had a nice butt, and I thought, ”Oh he’s hitting on me—I should try to go on a date with him!'”

When Lopez asked what happened, Hough replied: “He’s gay — so I was like, ”That’s not gonna work!'”

Following Mean Girls — in which he played Canadian actress Rachel McAdams’ boyfriend — Bennett appeared in the made-in-Ontario movie Cheaper by the Dozen 2 and had guest roles on the Vancouver-shot series Smallville and on Veronica Mars.

Reps for Bennett have declined to comment on Hough’s comment.

Although he has reportedly never publicly acknowledged his sexuality, Bennett was once linked to now-openly gay actor Matt Dallas.

In 2010, Bennett added his voice to the Love Is Louder anti-bullying campaign.

“Of all people, I know how mean people can be to each other. I mean, we made a whole movie about it,” Bennett said in a video message.

“It happened to me in high school, it happened to me in college [and] it still happens to me today. And I’m not gonna lie, it sucks. Sometimes it really sucks. But it doesn’t have to forever because there are people out there who love you, and love is a lot louder than hate.”
