iPhone 6 may ship later than expected thanks to record pre-order sales

TORONTO – If you pre-ordered one of the new iPhones hoping to be the first of your friends to have one, you might have to wait a bit longer than expected for your new device.

On Monday Apple revealed that it had received more than four million first-day pre-orders for the recently unveiled iPhone 6 and 6 Plus. But demand for the new devices has exceeded the company’s initial supply, which means some people may not receive their phones until October.

Pre-orders for the new iPhones doubled the two million order record set by the iPhone 5 in 2012.

The new phones are available in two sizes: the iPhone 6 with a 4.7-inch screen, and the iPhone 6 Plus, with a 5.5-inch screen.

According to Apple’s website, both the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus will take three to four weeks to ship to Canadian customers.

Canadian carriers Rogers, Fido, Telus, Bell and Virgin Mobile are also allowing customers to pre-order the new devices, both with and without contracts.

Bell’s website notes, “We are experiencing very strong demand and cannot guarantee your delivery for September 19th.” The company added it could take up to four weeks for delivery.

Telus estimates that devices will arrive between September 29 and October 6 – however, both the gold and space grey coloured phones will likely have later shipping dates.

Those hoping to get their hands on the new phones as soon as possible will have another chance Friday, when the devices officially hit shelves at Apple retail stores and authorized resellers in Canada and the U.S.

But make sure you have a sleeping bag and a good helping of patience if you plan on lining up Friday – typically, people camp out overnight for a chance to get a device before stores sell out.
