Junior high students from Mill Woods Christian School could soon be moving into the south campus of Grant MacEwan University, and that has some post-secondary students worried.

Global News has learned the University is currently in negotiations with the junior high, which is in desperate need of more space.

But since Mill Woods Christian offers education from a Christian perspective, students who attend the University are questioning how they will fit in within a University setting, where diversity of faith and sexual orientation is encouraged.

“We have posters around that say ‘Condoms are free, babies are not. Get your free condoms at the SA (Student’s Association) lounge and come to the pub crawl this weekend. And there was a picture of two guys kissing for Anti-Homophobia Day,” said Accounting student, James Lord.

“I don’t know specifically how MacEwan will deal with that,” added Lanie Giesbrech, who is also studying Accounting. “If they’ll simply remove inappropriate items, or there’ll be some kind of a compromise.”

The University’s President said the Christian students would spend most of their time in one wing of one floor, and the Campus would boost security for the younger students.

“And Mill Woods school itself has made the commitment that they will put on campus their own staff to ensure that the junior high school students are comfortable on campus, and our University students can continue with program unhindered,” said David Atkinson.

If the negotiations go through, the Christian school could move in as early as next month, and take over the campus completely next summer.
