REGINA – A Regina man is facing charges after a six-year-old boy was hit by a car in Regina on Thursday evening.

Police were called to 1st Avenue and Athol Street where a vehicle struck the young boy and fled the scene.

The boy was brought to the hospital where he was treated for a broken leg.

Further investigation led to identification of a suspect, and later that night police arrested 23-year-old Nash Eugene Cote, who was charged with hit and run causing bodily harm and breach of probation.

Regina police did not inform the public until Thursday after charges were laid, a decision which prompted criticism from some members of the public.

However, RPS said it was to not interfere with the investigation.

“A lot of times the investigation dictates that the information has to be withheld. The good part is now that we’ve laid charges, the information comes out in court and people can see just exactly what occurred,” said Leslie Parker, a spokesperson for the Regina Police Service.

Cote made his first court appearance on Friday morning.
