School bus loses brakes in Vernon parking lot

VERNON — Vernon RCMP say it’s lucky no one was hurt after a school bus lost its brakes.

The incident happened Wednesday afternoon in the parking lot above Kal Beach where a small school bus containing six children began rolling backward after its brakes failed, including the emergency brake.

The bus was being driven by a 35-year-old Saskatchewan woman.

Police say the bus began to roll backward after stalling. Then the bus bounced off a pick-up truck that tried to avoid the collision and continued to roll backwards into a parked van.

The van pushed through a chain link fence before coming to a stop.

“The parking lot is usually very busy with families coming and going to the beach at this time of day and it is extremely fortunate that nobody was hurt,” said Vernon RCMP spokesman, Gord Molendyk.

The bus has been ordered out of service until a full mechanical inspection is done.
