Fatal crash closes Hwy1 on Vancouver Island

The scene of the accident on Monday afternoon. Mandi Leigh

VANCOUVER –  A fatal crash on Highway 1 on Vancouver Island closed the road for about an hour-and-a-half Monday afternoon.

The victim has only been identified as a 65-year-old Langford man. He passed away in hospital and police are still notifying his next of kin.

The accident happened around 4 p.m. when a SUV and a motorcycle collided at the South Shawnigan Lake Road turnoff. RCMP say preliminary information indicates that the motorcyclist was travelling in the northbound lane when he was struck by a SUV turning into the same northbound lane of the highway, from South Shawnigan Lake Road.

The SUV was driven by a 41-year-old Victoria woman, who was not injured in the collision.

Our thoughts are with this man’s family and friends, said Sgt. Scott Stephen, detachment commander for the Shawnigan Lake RCMP. We’d like to extend our appreciation to those who rendered assistance at the scene, and for the patience shown by everyone who was delayed as we completed our investigation.

Mandi Leigh arrived on scene just seconds later and said she saw people had gotten out of their vehicles and were performing CPR on the driver of the motorcycle.

An RCMP Collision Analyst/Reconstructionist attended the scene of the crash to conduct a detailed investigation into the cause.
