VERNON – An emotional ceremony at the Vernon Army Cadet Summer Training Centre Thursday, as a longtime presence at the centre formally ended his career in the Canadian military.
Lieutenant-Colonel Lyle Johnson officially handed over command of the training centre.
He says he’s been on staff at the Vernon Army Cadet Summer Training Centre for 13 summers and was the commanding officer for the last four years.

Lieutenant-Colonel Judy Peter is taking over from Johnson.
She officially became the first female commanding officer of the centre at the ceremony.
Peter has her own memories of working with Johnson.
“He was very easy to talk to so if you had a problem you were able to go to him and get the guidance that you needed to carry on with your duties,” said Peter.
Flight Sergeant Dane Frizzell asked for a photo with the outgoing commanding officer.
“He’ll be definitely missed around here. I have one more summer here so hopefully we’ll be able to continue his memory,” says Frizzell.
The training centre will welcome new course cadets this weekend.
