Fatal shooting unintentional, Winnipeg police say of Canada Day death

WINNIPEG – A man has been arrested for firearms offences, including criminal negligence causing death, after a woman was shot dead early Tuesday morning.

John Elwood Cameron, 35, was allegedly handling his legally registered 9 mm handgun when Michelle Stobbe, 28, grabbed at his arm and the weapon fired and killed her at about 3 a.m.

Cameron called emergency crews and stayed at the scene in the 100 block of Donald Street, where police arrested him without incident, they said.

Cameron is charged with criminal negligence with a firearm causing death, careless storage of a firearm and two counts of having a prohibited weapon or ammunition. He’s being held at the Winnipeg Remand Centre.
