CALGARY – Officials have unveiled the new name Western Canada High School will be using for its athletic teams.
The school announced earlier this year it would be scrapping the ‘Redmen’ name used for its athletics department over concerns it was culturally insensitive.
On Thursday, Principal Kim Hackman announced their sports teams would now be known as the Western Canada Redhawks.
The decision was made after consultation with students, staff, parents, alumni, and First Nations, Métis and Inuit Elders (members of CBE Elder Advisory Council).

The new team name will be used for the 2014-15 school year and beyond.
The cost of the re-branding will be approximately $200,000.
