UPDATE: Searchers in Kananaskis find body of missing kayaker

Searchers looking for a missing kayaker have found his kayak and life jacket. Global News

UPDATE: RCMP were able to recover the body of the victim, a 31-year-old man, on Tuesday, June 10th, 2104. They are not releasing his name at this time.

CALGARY – The search for a kayaker who went missing in Kananaskis Country over the weekend continued on Monday.

The kayaker was spotted at Upper Kananaskis Lake south of Canmore, around 7 p.m. on Sunday.

Witnesses heard screams, and then saw a man who appeared to be in distress standing on his boat. He then fell into the water.

A Good Samaritan on the shore tried to swim out and save the kayaker some 200 metres away, but became stranded on a small island.

He was saved by a pilot in an Alpine Helicopters chopper who swooped down when he spotted the rescue efforts, flying the Good Samaritan to safety.

Emergency crews scouring the lake have have found the kayak and a life jacket, but not the missing kayaker.

The search resumed around 8 a.m. Monday with the help of a dive team. Helicopters were unable to take part in the search because of low cloud cover.
