A Greyhound bus driver is being investigated after video surfaced showing him driving on a northern Alberta highway while using his cell phone.

The video was recorded by David Sabine, a passenger onboard the bus, on a portion of a four-lane divided highway just south of Fort McMurray.

Sabine says that the driver was taking pictures and browsing through photos and that at times the bus swerved across lane markers painted on the road.

When he arrived home in Ft. McMurray Sabine tried calling the bus depot to express his concerns, but ended up being hung up on. He also had no luck submitting comments through Greyhound’s website. That’s when he decided to make the video public.

"The kind of response and the amount of response that I see the video has gotten means that people are sensitive to this issue," Sabine said. "I hope that the driver doesn’t lose his job, I never hoped that. I only hoped that I would have an opportunity to change it, to impact positive change."

Greyhound Canada representatives declined all requests for interviews, instead releasing the following statement via email:

"At Greyhound Canada, we instruct all employees that we have a zero tolerance policy regarding the use of mobile devices, including talking or texting on cell phones, while operating a company vehicle. This is a definite breach of our policy and something we take very seriously. We have identified this driver and are currently conducting an internal investigation, where we will determine appropriate disciplinary actions."
