SASKATOON – An early start to the golf season around Saskatoon has course operators seeing green. The first day of the season kicked off Friday and, despite the less than ideal weather, the course at Moon Lake Golf and Country Club was full.

It may not have been plus 18 but Moon Lake officially launched it’s 2014 season ahead of schedule.

These early rounds can turn a good year into a great year financially for golf courses.

On opening day at Moon Lake Golf and Country Club, the course takes great pride in being the first to open around Saskatoon.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“In the fall when it’s this cold you don’t get too many golfers out but in the spring everybody wants to get out there, they’re willing to throw on the extra layers and go out and tough through it rather then sit at home and watch golf,” said Mike Doherty, with Moon Lake Golf and Country Club.

Moon Lake was able to have 18 of it’s 27 holes playable.

Every season is different but opening early can pay dividends down the road.

“Definitely it helps out but you got to look, last year how many days did we get where we didn’t have any rain, we could get a lot of rainy days this year, it’s hit and miss,” said Doherty.

“It is what it is but it’s nice to get open early and take the pressure off the early rounds and get ahead of last year rather then being behind the 8 ball off the start.”

Despite it being windy, close to zero degrees, with snow in the bunkers and ice on the ponds, Moon Lake was booked solid.

Other courses around the city like The Willows Golf and Country Club will wait until Monday to have a better idea as to when they’ll be able to open.
