A new Aboriginal school officially opened in the South Okanagan Friday.

The Outma Sqilx’w Cultural School is in Penticton on Penticton Indian Band land.

The new school will be an educational and cultural centre for the community.

Its curriculum will include indigenous language lessons.

As he helped open the school, Grand Chief Stewart Phillip of the B.C. Union of Indian Chiefs says language is the crucible of all cultures.

Students in traditional Aboriginal attire performed at the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The $8 million facility will have kindergarten to grade 7 students.

The school took 18 months to build and was funded through the federal and provincial governments as well as band efforts.
