PRINCE ALBERT, Sask. – A Saskatchewan man has been released from custody after pleading guilty to criminal negligence causing death.
Dannie Justin Knife, 21, was charged following the death of Christian Bird from the Ahtahkakoop First Nation.
Bird, who was 25, was found clinging to a piece of ice on Sandy Lake on May 1, 2011, and was eventually pulled from the water but did not survive.
Four people, including Knife, were eventually charged with second-degree murder.
Knife pleaded guilty to the lesser charge this week in Prince Albert provincial court.
He was sentenced to time served and probation.
In December, his three co-accused, all of whom were under 18, pleaded guilty to criminal negligence causing death.
They received sentences between six, nine and 10 months followed by differing periods of open custody and a year of probation.
