SASKATOON – A Saskatoon metal fabrication plant is closing its doors, throwing 49 people out of a job.

Advance Engineering Products told employees last week it planned to close the Saskatoon plant on May 14 and cut 78 jobs at its production plant in Regina.

Workers at the two plants are represented by the Grain Services Union. The union wants to meet with the company to try and come up with a better adjustment plan for the 127 workers.

“A lot of employees were hired in the last two, three years and lots in the last year,” said union leader Doug Murray.

“Many of them were under the foreign worker program or just immigrants that have come to Canada to work, so now they’re out of a job.”

The union is looking for better severance pay and supplementary employment benefits.
