Accused in Scott Jones stabbing pleads guilty to attempted murder

HALIFAX – The man accused of stabbing Scott Jones in New Glasgow last October has plead guilty to attempted murder.

Shane Edward Matheson, 19, entered  his plea in Nova Scotia Supreme Court in Pictou on Thursday morning.

Matheson allegedly stabbed Jones outside a New Glasgow bar early on Oct. 13, 2013.

Charges of aggravated assault, assault with a weapon and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose were stayed.

The attack severed Jones’ spinal cord and he was left paralyzed from the waist down.

Jones has alleged he was attacked because he is gay.

News of the attack prompted an outpouring of support for Jones in the community and on social media.

Matheson is scheduled to be sentenced June 12 in Pictou.
