WATCH: Lumby prepares for flooding

LUMBY, B.C. — The Village of Lumby is hoping history doesn’t repeat itself, but residents and the community are preparing just in case it does.

Severe flooding drenched the village both in the spring of 2012 and 2013 and despite snow pack levels hovering around the yearly norm, Mayor Kevin Acton says locals are nervous it will happen again.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Some residents along with the community grocery store have built berms around their properties to protect from the potential flood waters.

But not everyone is on board with the prevention method. Mobile home owners living in a nearby trailer park down the road from the grocery store are concerned if flooding does happen the berm will force water onto their properties.

Lumby was hit hard by two major floods in May and June of last year after multiple area creeks spilled their banks. Multiple residents described it as the worst conditions they’d seen in more than a decade.
