Man killed in Banff National Park avalanche loved the outdoors

Friends are remembering Greg Di Valentin as a man who was enthusiastic about life and who loved playing in the mountains.

The 38-year-old was killed after the group he was skiing with triggered an avalanche in the Helen Shoulder Glades, near highway 93 Saturday.

Tom Waddell knew all of the members of the group; he says they were experienced and well equipped.

“They all have really good heads on their shoulders,” Waddell says. “I’m confident that they did everything they could under the conditions to be able to go and play safely.”

The group was familiar with the terrain and Waddell says they even acknowledged the risk of avalanche before heading out to the mountains Saturday.

“Anytime there is a mountaineering accident where somebody is seriously injured or passes away, it affects everybody,” Waddell says.

“I’ve already talked to several people today who had been out with Greg even just a handful of times who are quite devastated,” he adds.

Di Valentin’s death is the thirteenth avalanche death in Canada this year.

Last year five people were killed in avalanches.
