It was a close call for a busload of Kelowna students Tuesday night.

The bus, which was carrying a team of rugby players from Okanagan Mission High School, was traveling back from a game in Vernon when it lost power and the driver noticed smoke coming from the engine.

The driver pulled over along Highway 97 near the Oyama Road intersection and got the kids out.

Shortly after, the engine burst into flames.

Fire crews from Oyama and Winfield put the fire out.

Another bus was dispatched to take the students home.

No one was injured.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.

The seven-year-old bus, which is valued around $140,000, is a write-off.
