Toronto’s Catholic Board wants to bring cursive writing back

TORONTO – All this keyboard typing and tablet touching has prompted the Toronto Catholic District School Board to explore ways to reintroduce cursive writing back into the curriculum.

Trustee Ann Andrachuk told the Toronto Star many parents are complaining their children can’t even sign their name anymore.

The board recently approved a motion, originally introduced by Andrachuk, to examine how and when to bring back this lost art.

Cursive writing was part of the grades three and four language syllabus in Ontario prior to 2006, but it has since been removed and is only taught voluntarily by teachers.

When it comes to Canadian provinces, only Saskatchewan and Prince Edward Island ministries of education have outright refused to scale back teaching handwriting skills.
