Montreal yellow metro line closures start this weekend

LONGUEUIL – Starting this weekend, Longueuil residents who rely on the yellow metro line will have to make alternative plans.

The yellow line is going to be down for repairs each weekend through to May 25, and Montreal’s transit agency (STM) is using supplemental buses to bridge the gap in service.

The 804 Longueuil-Papineau-Berri-UQAM bus will run a similar schedule to the metro trains, but because it travels on the road its schedule will be subject to the whims of traffic.

When the STM unveiled the plan late last year, Montrealers already voiced concerns about how this would affect travel times, especially those who work on the weekends.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

About 30,000 passengers use the line per weekday out of Longueuil, with about 11,600 on Saturday and 7,800 on Sunday.

The repairs are necessary because water is leaking through cement in the yellow line tunnel between the Old Montreal river bank and Parc Jean Drapeau.

The metro line was constructed in 1967.

With the recent lane closures on the Champlain Bridge, the transit situation for South Shore residents could be rocky this year.
