Environment Canada has confirmed that a tornado touched down in western Manitoba on Sunday night.

Environment Canada has confirmed that a tornado touched down in western Manitoba on Sunday night.

It was observed near Rossburn, Man., around 8 p.m. on Sunday, Environment and Climate Change Canada said.

Environment Canada says it is working with Western University’s Northern Tornado Project (NTP) to further investigate the storms that were reported in the area on Sunday night.

Damages said to be the result of the tornado were also reported to the NTP, it said in a Facebook post.

“It is devastating. To me, it’s like a warzone,” Rossburn Mayor Shirley Kalyniuk said, adding that an elderly couple’s home has been wiped away.

“I will never say I totally understand how these people feel because I don’t … It’s a brick house that was built in the early 1900s and they’ve renovated and made it a beautiful home for them and their family.”

The couple who owns the home, Kalyniuk said, once lived in Winnipeg but moved to the Rossburn home to settle down.

“They were pretty much retired. They volunteered in the community and had a quiet life just doing what they liked to do,” she said, adding she has not spoken with the couple – who are currently staying with neighbours.

A home owned by a young family, was also hit but is still standing. The attached garage and some shingles were blown away, but the mayor said as of Monday, crews were already at work on the roof.

“I’ve lived here for 40 plus years, in Rossburn, and I have never experienced anything like this,” Kalyniuk told Global News.

More information on the tornado will be provided after the NTP investigation, Environment Canada said.

Environment Canada also reported a possible tornado in Roblin, Man., which is approximately 120 kilometres away, at 8:55 p.m. Sunday. However, “currently there is insufficient evidence to confirm a tornado occurred,” it says.

In the nearby community of Shoal Lake, winds as fast as 85 kilometres per hour were reported around the time of the twister in Rossburn.
