U.S President Donald Trump suggested Wednesday that the U.S. is “better without” the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) and he even prefers it to be “terminated.”
Trump spoke to reporters at the G7 in France before boarding a flight after attending the G7 summit.
His comments come as Canada, the U.S. and Mexico continue to negotiate an extension or replacement for the current free trade agreement.
On July 1, a mandated review process kicks off that will see the three countries either agree to renew CUSMA for another 16 years or enter a 10-year period of annual reviews.
In the latter scenario, the trade deal would stay in place while negotiations continue, though any country could choose to withdraw altogether by giving six months notice.
Canada and Mexico have both called for a 16-year extension, but Trump on Wednesday said he would rather see the agreement “terminated.”

“It’s not sticking around — it’ll be terminated, in other words, it expires. I prefer that,” he said.
Trump, who negotiated CUSMA during his first term, added that he only did so because the older North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) did not have a way for the U.S. to withdraw without congressional approval.
When pushed further on whether he intends to pull the U.S. out of CUSMA or leave it to be reviewed annually, Trump said he would prefer no agreement but he’s open to keeping it, adding, “I view it as possibly expiring immediately.”
Trump’s comments came after Canadian officials this week expressed confidence that CUSMA will remain in place, and as trade talks continue between all three countries leading up to the July 1 deadline.
Canada’s ambassador to the United States Mark Wiseman told a business crowd in Toronto on Monday that “it’s all going to be OK” and urged those worried about CUSMA’s expiry to “take a deep breath” and “relax.”
However, he noted that efforts to lower or remove sectoral tariffs on steel, aluminum, autos and other industries were the current focus of trade talks rather than CUSMA.
Official CUSMA negotiations between Canada and the U.S. have yet to begin, while those between the U.S. and Mexico are already underway.
United States Trade Representative Jamieson Greer has said there are “pillars” of the continental trade pact that work well, while other issues like rules of origin need to be renegotiated. He also has said he’d be open to two separate bilateral agreements.
Canada-U.S. Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc met with Greer on the sidelines of the G7 summit on Tuesday and said trade talks with his American counterpart are not a “one-way conversation.”
“We talked about a number of other issues that the United States raises with us,” LeBlanc told reporters. “But we also talked about issues that are important to Canadian workers and the Canadian economy.”
LeBlanc did not give details about Tuesday’s talks with Greer but said they “took stock ” of the work done since the Washington meeting and agreed to get in contact again soon.
“We made progress in resolving with Jamieson a number of issues that the United States Trade Representative has raised over a number months with Canada,” LeBlanc said.
Prime Minister Mark Carney said earlier Wednesday that he had multiple conversations with Trump on the sidelines of the summit this week, despite the lack of a formal bilateral meeting.
Trade was among the “wide range of subjects” they discussed, Carney told reporters, without sharing further details.

Nothing shocking here. Trump prefers bilateral vs multi-lateral treaties. Death of CUSMA doesn’t mean no treaty with USA
Aloha,
Before you curse me, Americans want to separate ourselves from everyone in the world because free trade doesn’t work for us. It isn’t that your workers or products are bad, it has to do more with exchange rates.
Before NAFTA and a short time 15 years ago, the Canadian dollar and US dollar were nearly at par. When I worked in northern Minnesota, businesses took for payment both American and Canadian dollars. Today $1.00 US dollar costs $1.40 Canadian. This was caused because the US dollar is the world’s key currency and is fixed while the Canadian dollar floats so, when the Canadian government prints currency, borrows funds, and gives away your money to Ukraine a deficit occurs, your inflation rises, and the value of your dollar drops.
When NAFTA started, we traded similar goods with currency of the same value.
Today, high US wages make our goods too expensive in Canada and trade is not equal. Over the last 15 years, wages in the US more than doubled while Canadian wages rose 10%, in other words, US wages rose ten times that of Canadian workers doing the same jobs and your taxes doubled compared to US workers.
US auto makers earn between $100,000 – $200,000 USD which is $140,000 – $280,000.
US healthcare employment doubled and now US pays the lowest drug costs in the world. There are many US hospitals that have more MRI machines than all of Canada. US medical care is the best in the world; major surgeries are arranged in days if not in hours. US nurses and other medical workers earn the highest wages in the world. My niece is a young medical doctor and earns $400,000 USD or $560,000 CAD, three times that of Canadian doctors, and she pays half the income tax of Canadian doctors.
The United States have high paying wages with just 4% unemployment while Canada paying poverty wages has 7% unemployment. Keep in mind that unlike Canada, the USA comparison is really 2% because we don’t add to our number’s seasonal, parttime, multiple jobs… President Trump wants American workers to earn more money and wants more products to be built in the USA. His thinking is considered sinful in Canada, if you want to sell manufactured products in America, you are welcome to build a manufacturing plant in America. If Canadian businesses do open a business in America, they will make a lot more money even after paying US workers twice what they pay Canadians, because US tax rates are so low, they will make 2,3, even 4 times the profit in America.
President Trump has begun downsizing the US government. Over one million government employees have had their jobs end. These people receive up to $60,000 and help getting placed in private industry jobs. On average, these former US government employees now earn 60% more money. While nearly 80% of all new Canadian jobs are government hires. In other words, your taxes will be going up.
The 51st state. Americans feel insulted because your politicians claimed to be insulted by President Trumps offer of marriage. I can tell you that the American people were horrified when Trump offered Canada to join America. Not a single American wants Canada. None of us would want to live there. Imagine how many Canadians would rush to our warm climates and ruin our housing stock. Unlike Canada our healthcare is excellent because we are willing to pay for service. Half of Canada’s senior citizens are disabled, and the other half are alcoholics. We don’t want Canada! We will not invade you!
F-35s. Canada reached a deal with America to buy 88 F-35 aircraft and are now want out. Did you know that for the past twenty plus years that the US gave contracts to dozens of Canadian businesses for F-35 parts? Canadian companies sell to the US $3.5 million dollars in manufactured parts for each and every F-35 built. The United States did this when we considered Canada to be a friend, and now the 88 F-35s Canada contracted to buy are on hold. A single US super aircraft carrier inventory is 90 aircraft. As an old fighter pilot, nothing on earth is more survivable nor a better stealth platform on earth. The enemy cannot see you, not only can you fire your own ordinance, but the F-35 can remote fire weapons from ships and outer space. The F-35 can stop and hover and land anywhere. Not a single F-35 was spotted by the newest China and Russian made defenses in Venezuela or Iran.
Auto companies in Canada receive free money and other inducements from the Canadian government. So, why is this a trade problem? Because 85-92% of all cars and trucks built in Canada are exported to the United States. I know Mr. Ford doesn’t want to hear this but subsidizing the car industry creates an unfair trade advantage because these autos are intentionally built for Americans. Your government is dumping government subsidized cars in the US, just like China is going to do to Canada with 49,000 cheap electric cars. Soon Canadian automakers will feel the pain we feel in the US, as these cheap China cars means 49,000 Canadian built autos will either not be built or will be dumped into the American market.
According to US trade law, Canada violated CUSMA/USMCA when the governments of 8 provinces and 3 territories removed US alcohol from shelves. According to trade rules, any and all Canadian and US businesses can buy, sell, display items using their own discretion. Likewise, Canadian and US consumers can choose to boycott any and all products they choose. However, neither Canadian nor US municipalities are allowed to remove one another’s products because it violates free trade and consumer choice options from consideration.
Mahalo for your valuable time,
Col. Ike Pono – Hawaii
Well maybe carney managed to soften him up at the G7. I saw that he gave trump his chair because trump complained about his own then swooned after trump said he liked the Birthday present carney bought him.
Elbows ….. maybe he should just sit on them
Why is that cocsucker not dead yet
Why does anyone with intelligence believe anything this man says?
“You will attract more flies with honey than you will with vinegar but not as many as you can with B.S. Look around any barn compared to a bee hive. That’s how politics works.”
Americans have no discernment when it comes to the people they elect to the office of president…
And most of the world would like to see Trump terminated
Trump totally dominating Mr.
Elbows Up Carney. Carney has hubris and rhetoric but has shown zero results in over a year.
Sorry Canadians. USA calls the shots and has all the cards. If we don’t want to renew the agreement, we don’t have to.
Whining Canadians that don’t get business. Just because an American is Pro-USA doesn’t mean we are anti- Canadian but yes we do things for the USA’s best interests. Time to grow up and stop playing victims.
Carney needs to end supply management, that’s been a sticking point for years, it raises the cost of groceries for Canadians and benefits the rich. We don’t need it.
CUSMA isn’t good for the USA and should exit the agreement. Trump is doing the best for the USA. This is business and not personal. Obviously Carney is doing a poor job with the negotiating.
@Unlimited. Sorry not a bot. You seem to think anything that you don’t agree with comes from a bot. Must be an Elbows Up Canadian.
No CUSMA, No Ontario auto industry (maybe a couple of Chinese Auto Assembly Plants). Guess which Province will be holding the next separation referendum? Haha!
@Shame Wolf – we can tell by your grammar that you are AI but without the “I”
Yeah bud? Well we would like to see you “terminated”. If there’s a god………………..
Unreal how Global allows American g*rbage to spew their anti Canada cr*p but does not allow a Canadian to fight back! F*CK YOU GL*BAL!
I think USA should pull out of USMCA and just do a bi-lateral with Mexico. Canada can move closer to Europe. Would nice to see all the automotive manufacturing in Canada move to the USA. Why prop up their industrial base when they take advantage of the USA while bad mouthing Americans at the same time. We can boycott Canada just like they do with us.
Does anyone listen to Trump anymore? 🤣
Note to Mark Carney. Trade with Europe cannot replace the trade with the United States. Make a deal and stop stalling.
@Anonymoous. I come back to rattle hard left progressives like you.
Elbows Up Canadians don’t seem to realize that Trump is doing what is best for the USA. That may not align with what is best for Canada. Unfortunately, Carney does what is best for him
And not Canada.
Great to hear all the L I b t a r d s on here supporting Carney and the failing liberals
you just don’t get it like your hero Carney.
Trump knows how to negotiate simple !!!
Canada is a nation of cowards.
Carney totally striking out with Trump. He can’t even get a 1::1 meeting with Trump. Trump doesn’t respect Carney
250000 girls were raped in the UK as per the report released today…. I’m counting down two weeks from today that Global News will report on it
He sure throws all the negotiating possibilities out there, doesn’t he?
@Mike Caswell. Why are sill here MAGA? You should take fellow dead beat MAGAs with you.
Let’s see what happens when your guy gets tired of playing president
I agree with Trump the free trade agreement with Canada should be terminated. They are selfish and don’t support the NA security needs.
So glad I moved to the USA in early 2019 from Canada. Clearly the decline is in full effect with first Trudeau and now Elbows Up Carney.
Hilarious. Carney can’t even get a 1:1 meeting with Trump at the G7. Didn’t Carney tell everyone he was the “guy” to get a deal and knew how to handle Trump. Clearly Carney is clueless.

All the elbozos in the comments that want to cut off this or that critical material to the states:
First it wont happen. Canada is a nation of cowards.
Second, i hope it does. That is all Trump needs to relieve us from the destructive liberal nonsense.
Canada is a nation of cowards hey? Ever said that to a Canadians face? How about we meet sometime and you can try it out. You will find this Canadian far far from a coward as you spit the pieces of your teeth out of your throat.
This is great news , turn off the oil taps , no more fertilizer, no more water, power unless trump pays a premium.

Ya it will take 10 years and taco will be long and gone by then.
As a Free Trade Negotiation ststegy Canada should unilaterally cease exporting electricity to the U.S. for one day, then natural gas for the following day then potash the following day then lumber, aluminium etc. etc. these rolling export cutoffs would be very hard for Canada to implement but far harder for the U.S. to deal with. Electricity Brown-outs in eastern U.S. and gas plants shut-in, in the west, will clearly demonstrate that the U.S. NEEDS CANADA.
I would prefer to see Trump terminated (of completely natural causes).
No potash for you
Maybe someone should explain to the toddler what the North American Free trade deals do for each country. The US gets to have Canadian and Mexican raw materials. The US gets to sell things in Canada and Mexico. The US gets to have access to cheap labour in Mexico.
Yes, we buy less than they do, but 10% is often the profit margin. so business will go under. Trump wants all merchandise to be built in the US. However he does not understand how intertwined the supply system is. He loves his illegal tariffs. I wonder what would happen if we cut off their uranium, potash, oil, gas, timber, electricity. It would be the end of their world. – what is he thinking? Obviously only of himself.
Trump is a fn idiot he calls himself a business man. Really!!!! He is losing a war that he started and not even getting the deal that Obama had in place. Loser with capital L
Honestly what ever, idk why everyone is so blind to what happens in our economy. We’ve taken the US for granted for way too long and now your feeling the bulls horns.
Sure Dave – whatever you say
this dumb butthole has no say. He can’t terminate it without congress. I thought he would know that since he’s the one who made the deal in thr first place
I agree with him
The deal negotiated by the LPC was terrible for.Canada
